Benfica-Paris S.G 3 - 1
It took an 89th-minute penalty from Benfica captain Simão to end Paris Saint-Germain brave resistance and send the Portuguese club into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
After the 2-1 from last week’s first round Benfica made a strong response with goals from Simão and Petit. But, PSG didn’t quit and Pauleta scored and threatened to take the tie into extra time, until Simão’s goal from penalty.The evening start beautiful for Fernando Santos’s men as Simão slid the ball under PSG keeper Mickaël Landreau on 12 minutes. Things got even better when Petit made it 2-0 after 27 minutes.
But Benfica’s advantage lasted only for 5 minutes before Jérôme Rothen’s cross and Pauleta score with a header under keeper Moretto. PSG could even equalize but Pauleta, Sammy Traoré and Amara Diané missed their chances In 88 minute Mulumbu received a second yellow card for a foul inside the box.
However the greater punishment was dealt to PSG by Simão’s penalty that send Benfica in the quarter-finals.
