AZ Alkmaar - Newcastle United 2 - 0
AZ Alkmaar manage a stirring 2-0 victory over Newcastle United that carried them into the UEFA quarter-finals. Goals from Shota Arveladze and Danny Koevermans repair the damage of last week’s 4-2 loss in England.
AZ did not take long to score : Koevermans delivering a low ball across goal from the right and Arveladze scored for 1-0. Newcastle replied and Scott Parker lifted a shot just over from the edge of the area. AZ kept dominating the game withh their slick passing game and they ask for a penalty when moment Jenner went down under Paul Huntington’s challenge but referee Bertrand Layec waved play on.
The Dutch team scored again after the break as as Koevermans headed AZ’s second goal from Maarten Martens’ corner. Chances now came and went for both sides. Koevermans’ spectacular overhead attempt flew centimeters over, then Waterman stopped Parker’s low drive.. On 72 minutes Jenner again got clear down the right but the goal was denied by Given.
For Newcastle, this was their first defeat in 14 European matches and their journey is over but AZ’s adventure goes on.
